I was editing pictures in my camera
between shots of a bride's preparation
in a beauty salon when the woman sitting to my side,
a salon patron, said that she heard artists and
photographers could tell if a person would look
attractive when they got old. She was about sixty
and questioned whether it was true.
I had a hunch where this was going so
I said "sure, the ones who look beautiful when
they get old all have one thing in common."
I could see this woman physically slide
to the edge of her seat in anticipation of my answer.
"It's not in their genes, or exercise, or even cosmetic surgery."
I had the woman's complete attention at this point.
"The one thing beautiful old people have in common"
I told her, "is they all smile a lot."
The woman walked away in silence.
